Energy-Saving Cooking Stoves in Shirango Conservancy

In rural Kenya, communities like Shirango Conservancy continue to rely on the traditional three-stone cooking method. However, this cooking method has challenges: it consumes large amounts of fuelwood, transfers heat inefficiently, and generates harmful indoor air pollution. These issues not only threaten public health but also contribute to environmental degradation.

Recognizing the urgent need for change, Tsavo Trust, in partnership with USAID and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), initiated a transformative project to introduce energy-saving cooking stoves in Shirango Conservancy. These innovative stoves are not only simple and affordable, but they also reduce fuelwood consumption by 65%. Constructed from locally sourced materials such as bricks and sand, the stoves are equipped with chimneys that channel smoke outside, reducing indoor air pollution by over 65%.

In August 2024, Tsavo Trust facilitated an intensive two-week training program for 10 youth from Shirango Conservancy, equipping them with the skills needed to design, build, and maintain energy-saving stoves. This hands-on training did more than impart knowledge—it empowered these young individuals to become champions of sustainable practices within their communities.

One trainee, Hashora Devicha, shared her experience: “At first, I thought this would be too challenging for a woman, but now I feel empowered. I plan to construct stoves for my community.”

This training has opened new doors for the youth of Shirango Conservancy, providing them with sustainable livelihoods that move them away from environmentally harmful practices like charcoal production. Through this project, these youths are now set to build 200 stoves across 200 households, directly benefiting 2,000 people.

This initiative is not just about stoves; it’s about building a sustainable future. By reducing deforestation, improving public health, empowering youth and women, and boosting local economies, Tsavo Trust and its partners are driving transformative change in Shirango Conservancy.

Join us in our mission to safeguard biodiversity and empower communities across the greater Tsavo ecosystem. Together, we can create lasting change.
