Empowering Youth in Shirango Conservancy

A Path to Sustainable Conservation

At Tsavo Trust, we believe youth involvement is key to the success of community-based conservation. Young people are powerful environmental stewards, yet often lack the opportunities to actively contribute to environmental conservation. Tsavo Trust in partnership with USAID and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) is breaking down these barriers by equipping 21 youth from Shirango Conservancy with hands-on training in tree nursery management.

This one-day training, hosted at the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) Gede Station, provided essential skills for establishing and managing tree nurseries. Led by experts from KFS and the Kenya Forest Research Institute (KEFRI), the youth learned the techniques for nurturing indigenous trees, laying the foundation for critical reforestation efforts that will restore Shirango’s environment and enhance biodiversity.

This initiative goes beyond environmental restoration. It creates economic opportunities for the local youth. The project has equipped the youth with essential tools, a 135,000 litres dam liner for rainwater harvesting, and ongoing capacity building. The youths are now ready to manage their own tree nurseries. The project fosters local leadership, builds self-reliance, and opens new pathways for economic growth within the community.

Christine Dhiram, a participant, shared her excitement: “Before this training, I knew very little about tree nurseries. Now, with the skills and knowledge I have gained, I am eager to inspire my fellow youth in the Shirango Conservancy and our entire community to join in restoring our land.”

This initiative represents more than just planting trees—it’s about creating lasting change. Each seedling represents a greener, more resilient future, where youth are actively creating sustainable livelihoods and inspiring their peers to protect the environment.
