An Elephant at Birth
At birth, an African elephant calf can tip the scales at nearly 90.7 kilograms (200 pounds). To put this in perspective, the average human weighs about 82 kilograms (180 pounds). The gestation period of an elephant is 22 months, the longest of any living mammal.
On average, an adult African elephant weighs about 5,443 kilograms (12,000 pounds), surpassing any other land creature. Even female elephants, typically smaller, often weigh between 2,268 and 6,350 kilograms (5,000 to 14,000 pounds).
Height Matters Too
Size encompasses both weight and height. African elephants reach towering heights, with the largest individuals standing in excess of 13 feet (4 meters) at the shoulder, while the average height is around 10.5 feet. Complementing this remarkable stature, their trunk extends up to 7 feet in length, enabling them to access vegetation situated high in trees, rivalling even the access of giraffes to these lofty food sources.
Their colossal size also requires an impressive appetite. Scientists estimate that the largest elephants can consume more than 136 kilograms (300 pounds) of food in a single day. Due to their relatively inefficient digestive systems, elephants need to feed for 18 hours a day to maintain their mass.
Brains and Hearts
Elephants not only possess enormous bodies but also impressive organs. They have the largest brain of any land mammal, weighing between 4.5 to 5.5 kilograms (10 to 12 pounds). Furthermore, their hearts are substantial, comprising about 0.5% of their total body weight, ranging from 12 to 21 kilograms (26.5 to 46.3 pounds).
What is the largest elephant ever recorded?
The largest recorded elephant, aptly named the “Giant of Angola,” stood 13 feet (3.96 meters) at the shoulder and weighed an astounding 10,400 kilograms. This colossal creature was hunted in Angola in 1956, and its skin remains on display at the Natural History Museum in Washington.

This also highlights the importance of protecting elephants within the Tsavo Conservation Area; Satao was a successful breeder and would have passed his genes on to the future generations of Tsavo elephants, ensuring the continuation of these massive creatures in Africa.
How much does an Asian elephant weigh?
Asian elephants are relatively small compared to their African counterparts. Adult male Asian elephants weigh between 1,800 to 4,500 kilograms (4,000 to 10,000 pounds), with females weighing slightly less. Their shoulder height ranges from 6.6 to 11.5 feet (2 to 3.5 meters).
What is the smallest elephant?
While we’ve explored the larger elephant species, there’s also a smaller species. The Borneo elephant, often called the Bornean pygmy elephant, is the smallest of its kind. Adult Bornean pygmy elephants stand at less than 5 feet (1.5 meters) high and can weigh up to 4,000 pounds (1,800 kilograms). These petite pachyderms are a fascinating contrast to their larger relatives.
